Review: inFAMOUS

inFAMOUS

TechJunkeez PS3 Editor | August 2009

Infamous is an open world game set in a fictional empire city which has been destroyed by a huge blast. The most interesting thing in the blast is the source of it, a package in the hands of a delivery boy named Cole. Sure, the whole city is in ruins and all the citizens are dead or dying, but what was happening to Cole was a completely opposite situation. He became stronger and gained the ability to hone electricity and use it for his own preference.

Later on in the story you will understand why he gained those abilities from the blast and who was responsible for it but I won’t spoil the game for you.

The story is represented in comic book cut-scenes which are amazing. The story itself is an extraordinary piece of work, a huge twist in the end will explain every single detail of the whole campaign.

Although this game does not have great graphics, it seems that the developers were not aiming for that. The look of the game is kind of cartoony which isn’t my favorite choice but I guess it made them happy. On the flipside the animations and the superpowers look astounding.

Cole can shoot from just about anything he is hanging from which adds more flexibility to the gameplay

A huge factor in this game which hasn’t been offered in previous superhero titles is the fact that you can be a supervillain as well. The way you choose to play the game changes your “karma meter”. The karma meter is semi circle which fills up blue if you are good and fills up red if you are bad. In almost all mission you’ll be prompted by a yellow tinted cut scene where you start hearing what is going on in Coles head. Cole mentions two ways of tackling the mission, one heroic and one evil and you’ll go ahead and choose which way you’re going to take. Karma is also affected by factors that don’t concern missions, like shooting civilians or healing people around the city that are about to die.

Each karma has its own superpower upgrades, so if you are being bad you’ll get superpowers that good karma can’t have and vice versa. This of course increases the replayablity of the game, you’ll want to finish it twice to know what superpowers you’ve been missing out on in the first play through.

Explosions and shooting effects look great

Another awesome feature is that the city looks different according to how you play the game. Being good will make the city appear to have started healing from the blast and people becoming happier. Being bad will make the city’s condition even worse and civilians will throw small stones at you and make protests.

Infamous has a very nice and open gameplay, you have about 5 superpowers at your disposal from the start of the game, and you’ll gain about 15 more by the end of the game. Cole’s movement is very fluid, he can run around the streets or climb huge buildings and jump around from one to another or us electric cables to grind across the city. Controls feel right and all the powers seem nicely chosen by the developer and offer a variety of ways to attack the enemy. Some powers use battery and some don’t. Your battery is shown in the top left corner of the screen and is filled by draining electric objects around you, but that’s not a huge problems since electric stuff are almost everywhere around you. The basic shooting doesn’t need battery for example which is a good decision because you’ll always need to be able to shoot, but fancy weapons like electric grenades and missiles use battery.

Boss battles are forgettable but they are entertaining. infamous offers a large variety of enemies

Voice acting is nice all around, explosions sound a little weak but other effects like draining and shooting sound just right.

Going through the career once with completing the side missions and collecting stuff around the city offers long hours of playing, and as I mentioned, you’ll want to go through the game on the opposite karma. This game is a groundbreaking achievement in superhero games as well as open world games, so it’s a definite recommendation from me and just about anyone who played the game.
