A Few Tips For Better Gaming

By Mohammad Yousef | July 2004

You might not be a hardcore gamer, but this doesn’t mean you can’t fancy playing a game from time to time. Let’s face it; no matter what we do, how old we are… most of us enjoy some type of computer games. There are so many out there that you must find a game that suits your taste. But what if you don’t happen to have the ultimate gaming machine? Simple: read these few tips to improve your gaming performance.

Choose the right OS: Contrary to popular belief, among current Windows operating systems, XP is the best for games. Read this article to find out why.

Install patches: No software is flawless and especially if it’s complicated. This is why we keep on seeing new versions of programs coming out regularly. And there’s no exception when it comes to games. Most well-known game makers create patches which can be downloaded from the internet for free. You should find these patches on the vendor’s website.

Get the latest drivers: Hardware drivers aren’t perfect either. You should get the latest drivers for your graphic card and other hardware to gain some more performance.

Upgrade your hardware: buying newer parts for your PC will significantly improve gaming. Make sure you get a good graphic card such as ATi Radeon 9600XT which should be more than enough if you don’t play games very often. Also buying a faster hard drive will cause your games to load faster.

Turn off extra apps: close as many running processes as possible. These extra apps can suck your system resources dry. You should even temporarily turn off your antivirus and software firewall unless you’re online.

Kill Spyware: this new type of malware causes more harm than most people think. To scan for and remove spyware, I recommend two free programs: Ad-aware and Spybot. Another tool I like is SpywareBlaster which tries to prevent spyware instead of removing them. SpywareBlaster won’t consume your system resources because you don’t even need to keep it running. Whatever you decide to use make sure to keep the program updated.
